The water chestnuts are still growing! I have not had a chance to set up their grow-basket in the 12′ round pool, but with the help of my 3 boys a couple weekends ago, I was able to set up a small bog.
Using some woodchips that we had chipped last summer, the boys made a rough outline of the bog. The chips were placed on the ground in a pile about 8″ high. Once the chips were in place, a double layer of greenhouse plastic sheeting was put down over the grass and roughly centered. Several inches of topsoil (probably old creek bed silt) was dug up from a litte ways away and placed on to the plastic. The bog was filled up to a depth of about 6″ and left to settle and warm in the sun.
A couple of days later, I transfered about 16 water chesnut plants from the tub where they have been growing. The tallest reeds are well over a foot high, now.
